Sega and RGG Studio are rebuilding Virtua Fighter as a narrative driven action adventure called Virtua Fighter Crossroads, set to launch in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 5 2026 and expanded through a dedicated showcase, the game pairs the series classic three button fighting with a full single player story mode, a first for a mainline Virtua Fighter. At Evo in Las Vegas, Sega kept the momentum going with a new character reveal, a mysterious fighter hunter known as the Bakunawa Killer.

The headline is the ambition. This is the first brand new mainline entry since Virtua Fighter 5 arrived in arcades in 2006, and Sega is not treating it as a nostalgia exercise. RGG Studio, the team behind the Yakuza games, is building Crossroads in Unreal Engine 5, with a story written by Brad Kane of Ghost of Tsushima and oversight from David Hayter. That pedigree explains the cinematic confidence on display and why the early footage drew so much attention.

What Is Virtua Fighter Crossroads?

Crossroads is a fighting game wrapped inside a sprawling action adventure set in the fictional Southeast Asian city of Vilasapara, the City of Martial Arts. Players move through an omnibus story told from the perspective of four protagonists, exploring districts, taking side quests, and brawling through encounters that use the core combat system. A new fighter named Cielo is positioned as the face of the game, stepping into the role long held by Akira Yuki. The base roster is set at 16 characters, mixing newcomers with returning favorites like Pai Chan and Wolf Hawkfield.

Who Is Building the Game and Why Does That Matter?

RGG Studio is the reason this revival looks different from a standard fighter. The studio made its name on the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series, which fuse melodrama, side content, and street level brawling into dense single player worlds. Handing Virtua Fighter to that team tells you exactly where the priorities sit. Sega is borrowing the structure that made Street Fighter 6 World Tour a hit and pushing it further, betting that a strong solo campaign is what gives a modern fighting game staying power beyond the competitive crowd.

How Does Crossroads Change the Fighting Game Formula?

For decades, fighting games sold themselves on versus play and left single player content as an afterthought. Crossroads inverts that, leading with a written, voice acted campaign while keeping the traditional versus mode intact for purists. It is the first Virtua Fighter to carry an R rating, owing to mature language, and the first to lean this hard on narrative. If it works, it could pull lapsed fans and newcomers who never touched an arcade stick, while still feeding the competitive scene that Evo exists to celebrate.

Virtua Fighter has spent too long on the bench, and a revival this bold from the Yakuza team is the most interesting thing to happen to the series in two decades. Shop on Amazon
