Turso is a clean room rewrite of SQLite built in the Rust programming language, designed to keep full compatibility with the SQLite file format and SQL dialect while adding capabilities the original C codebase cannot easily support. The project began under the codename Limbo and lives at github.com/tursodatabase/turso, where its team has been adding an asynchronous interface, memory safety, concurrent writes, and built in vector search to the most widely deployed database engine in the world.
Why rewrite SQLite at all?

Reliability is the entire reason SQLite earned its reputation, so the rewrite leans heavily on Deterministic Simulation Testing, a method popularized by the team behind TigerBeetle. By building a simulator into the core of the database and partnering with Antithesis, the project can replay years of execution under different event orderings, surface rare failures, and reproduce any bug it finds with complete consistency. The team treats writing simulations the way most developers treat unit tests.
It helps to understand that Turso is an ecosystem rather than a single product. One pillar is libSQL, a production ready C fork of SQLite that already powers real applications. The other is the Turso Database, the clean room Rust rewrite that carries the ambitious architectural changes and sits in a beta stage. The Rust engine is not finished, but it marks the long term direction of the whole effort.
Who is Turso built for?
The clearest fit is the wave of AI agents that need cheap, disposable databases. Because Turso Cloud can branch and roll back databases with a single API call, agent builders can spin up large numbers of ephemeral databases and stay fault tolerant while their agents act. Privacy focused products use the built in vector search to keep all data on a user's device, so search stays fast and nothing leaves the machine.
Beyond agents, the design targets edge, serverless, and multi tenant architectures, including the database per user pattern with embedded replicas.
