One author, three slots, all from the same series. That is not a fluke. That is a phenomenon, and it is worth understanding why a series most casual readers have never heard of is quietly dominating one of the most prestigious lists in publishing.
For the uninitiated, Dungeon Crawler Carl is a LitRPG series, a genre that fuses novels with the mechanics of video games. The premise is gloriously unhinged. Aliens convert Earth into a deadly multi level dungeon and broadcast the slaughter as a galaxy wide reality show. Our hero is Carl, a former Coast Guard veteran who descends into the dungeon in his boxer shorts alongside his ex girlfriend's pampered show cat, Princess Donut, who gains the power of speech and an enormous ego. It sounds like a joke, and on one level it is, but underneath the absurdity Dinniman is writing one of the sharpest satires of spectacle and exploitation in modern fiction.
The newest entry, A Parade of Horribles, is the eighth book in the series, and it lands Carl and Donut on the tenth floor for a deceptively simple challenge: races. Think Mario Kart, except the last finisher in each heat is eliminated, and eliminated means dead. After every race they pick a vehicle upgrade and the track gets nastier. The whole thing feels suspiciously normal by dungeon standards, which is precisely the trap. Looming over it all is the mysterious eleventh floor, which the system AI has ominously dubbed "a coming out party for the ages," and Carl, who hates having his agency stripped away, starts planning something so dangerous he cannot even tell his friends.
What separates Dinniman from the pack is craft hiding inside chaos. Reviewers describe his writing as building a clockwork toy with a bomb packed inside it. He does not just introduce a Chekhov's gun, he hands you an entire arsenal in the first two chapters, and elements you forgot about resurface three books later in the most unexpected places. The comedy never undercuts the dread. It makes the dread bearable just long enough to hit harder when it arrives. Holding that tonal balance at book eight, rather than book one, is the mark of an author operating on instinct.
So why is it resonating now? Part of it is the audiobook engine. Narrator Jeff Hays has turned the series into a performance, voicing Donut and the rest of the cast with a range that has built a fiercely loyal listener base, many of whom re listen to all seven previous books before each new release. Part of it is the self published to bestseller arc that the internet loves to champion. And part of it is simply that the genre has crossed over. LitRPG used to be a niche corner of fiction. Dinniman dragged it onto the NYT list and kept it there.
This book is perfect for a very specific reader, and if it is you, you already know. If you grew up on video games, if you appreciate dark humor that earns its emotional gut punches, if you love a story that treats its own ridiculous premise with total commitment, A Parade of Horribles is a blast. It is also a genuinely smart book about agency and the cruelty of systems that pretend to be fair. Start from book one if you are new. You will not regret it, though Donut might judge you for it.
